Who is Manish Gupta and why is his role in Delhi CM’s office stirring controversy?

After visuals of Manish Gupta meeting officials at CM’s residence surfaced, AAP alleges “backdoor governance”; BJP remains silent on the matter

New Delhi, 14 April 2025—

A political controversy has erupted in the national capital after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s husband, Manish Gupta, was spotted meeting with high officials at the CM’s official residence. The opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has made allegations against the ruling BJP, stating that an unelected individual is interfering with the administration, which they say contradicts democratic principles.

What Happened:

In photos that surfaced online, CM’s husband was seen interacting with officials in what appeared to be a formal setting. The pictures show him discussing government files and engaging with bureaucrats during working hours, raising concerns about the role he plays in the functioning of the Chief Minister’s Office.

AAP’s Allegation:

AAP has accused the BJP-led Delhi government of violating democratic norms. The party alleged that an unelected individual — even if a close family member — should not be involved in handling or overseeing government affairs.

AAP has further demanded a clarification from the Chief Minister and the BJP, asking whether Manish Gupta holds any formal position in the administration.

Who Is Manish Gupta?

Manish Gupta is a retired officer from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). He has no known formal designation in the Delhi government and his sudden visibility in what appeared to be an official capacity has prompted this wave of criticism, especially given BJP’s earlier positions on bureaucratic transparency and anti-VIP culture.

As of now, neither the Chief Minister’s Office nor the BJP has issued an official clarification on Manish Gupta’s role or the nature of his interactions with officials and BJP leaders have refrained from commenting publicly.

The issue has stirred debate because BJP has often been critical of dynastic or family-based politics, especially in parties like the Congress. The current controversy involving a family member being seen discussing government work has led to accusations of double standards by the opposition.

AAP has said it will take the matter further in the Delhi Legislative Assembly and may seek a response from the Lieutenant Governor.
