World Malaria Day: 6 Tips to Protect Your Children from Malaria

New Delhi : Malaria presents a growing health threat worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that malaria not only directly affects health and claims lives, but it also perpetuates a cycle of inequality. Those most vulnerable, including pregnant women, infants, children under 5, refugees, migrants, internally displaced people, and Indigenous Peoples, continue to bear a disproportionate burden.

Malaria primarily spreads through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes and can also be transmitted via contaminated needles or blood transfusions.

World Malaria Day, observed on April 25, aims to raise awareness and promote better health practices for improved access to services.

Malaria Symptoms: Mild symptoms include fever, chills, and headaches, while severe cases can lead to fatigue, confusion, seizures, and breathing difficulties. Children are especially at risk due to their weaker immune systems. Here are preventive measures to safeguard children from infection.

6 Ways to Prevent Malaria in Children

There are various ways to prevent malaria both at home and outdoors.

  1. Use mosquito repellent creams, sprays, etc.
  2. Install mosquito nets around bedding to shield children from infected mosquito bites.
  3. Dress children in long-sleeved clothing and full-length pants to prevent parasite bites when outdoors.
  4. Avoid areas with standing water, bushes, or stagnant corners—common breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
  5. Maintain good hygiene, lifestyle, and dietary practices to combat malaria. Increase fluid intake and consume a balanced diet rich in nutrients, including immune-boosting foods like fruits, nuts, and seeds.
  6. Ensure adequate Vitamin D levels.
By implementing these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of malaria infection in children.
