Rising Safety Concerns Over Boeing Dreamliners: 3 Flights Turn Back in a Day After Ahmedabad Incident

New Delhi: June 16, 2025
Fresh safety concerns have emerged around Boeing’s Dreamliner aircraft, as three separate international flights were forced to return mid-air on the same day due to technical issues or security threats. The incidents come shortly after an Air India Dreamliner skidded off the runway in Ahmedabad, further raising concerns about the aircraft’s operational safety.
Air India Flight Returns to Hong Kong Mid-Flight
The latest incident concerns Air India Flight AI315, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner traveling from Hong Kong to Delhi. Midway through the journey, the flight experienced a suspected technical malfunction and was forced to return to Hong Kong International Airport as a safety precaution.
More Dreamliners Affected: Flights from London and Frankfurt Also Turn Around
Two other incidents involving Dreamliners were reported the same day:
- A British Airways flight from London to Chennai had to turn back to Heathrow Airport following a technical fault detected during the flight.
- A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Hyderabad was called back to Frankfurt after a bomb threat was reported, prompting immediate emergency protocols.
Ahmedabad Incident Sparks Deeper Fears
These developments follow a runway mishap in Ahmedabad, where an Air India Dreamliner skidded off the runway during landing. Though no passengers sustained serious injuries, the incident has raised alarms about the operational safety of the aircraft model.
Pattern of Technical Failures
The Boeing Dreamliner series, hailed for its advanced technology and passenger comfort, has seen an uptick in technical faults and mid-air incidents in recent months. These recurring problems are now being viewed with increasing concern by aviation authorities and passengers alike.
DGCA on High Alert, Calls for Enhanced Monitoring
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been alerted to the rising number of Dreamliner-related disruptions. Experts are calling for a comprehensive technical review and stricter oversight of Boeing 787 operations by both airlines and regulatory bodies. Passenger safety, they emphasize, must remain the top priority.
As scrutiny grows, both Boeing and airlines operating Dreamliners may face mounting pressure to address these recurring issues to restore confidence in one of the world’s most widely used long-haul aircraft.
