‘Akash’ Impresses with Indigenous Power; Brazil Expresses Interest in Multiple Indian Defense Products
BRICS Summit May See New Strategic Partnerships Between India and Brazil
New Delhi – 4 July 2025
India’s indigenously developed air defense system ‘Akash’ has once again made a strong impression on the global stage. Brazil has shown deep interest in the powerful missile system and expressed a willingness to strengthen its defense partnership with India. The Brazilian government has not only praised the ‘Akash’ system but also shown enthusiasm for other Indian defense products, including Scorpene-class submarines, Garuda artillery guns, patrol vessels, and secure communication systems.
Strategic Dialogue Expected at BRICS Summit
Brazil is hosting the BRICS Summit this week in Rio de Janeiro, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to participate. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, P. Kumaran, noted that discussions during the summit are expected to include defense collaboration, joint research, and military training. He emphasized that Brazil’s growing interest in Indian defense technology could open new avenues of bilateral cooperation.
‘Akash’ Proved Its Mettle in Operation Sindoor
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the ‘Akash’ surface-to-air missile system demonstrated its operational excellence during Operation Sindoor in May. During this mission, the Indian Army successfully intercepted and neutralized enemy drones and missiles. The ‘Akash’ missile system can effectively destroy aerial threats up to a range of 25 kilometers with high precision.
India’s Defense Exports on the Rise
Brazil’s enthusiasm signals continued momentum in India’s rise as a global defense exporter. Once known mainly as an importer of defense equipment, India is now steadily establishing itself as a reliable and trusted global defense supplier. If the proposed deal moves forward, it could bring substantial strategic and technological benefits for both nations.
PM Modi is presently visiting five countries and will join the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro from July 5th to 8th. The summit is expected to lay the foundation for new defense and strategic cooperation between India and Brazil.
