Israeli Airstrike in Tehran Kills Iran’s Wartime Chief of Staff Ali Shadmani

Fifth Day of Israel-Iran Conflict Sees Targeted Strike on Top Iranian Military Commander

New Delhi: 17 June 2025

In a major escalation of the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday claimed responsibility for an airstrike in central Tehran that killed Major General Ali Shadmani, Iran’s Wartime Chief of Staff and commander of the elite Khatam al-Anbiya Emergency Command.

According to a statement posted on social media platform X, the IDF said the airstrike was executed with precision following actionable inputs from its intelligence units. The strike targeted a military headquarters in central Tehran, where Shadmani was reportedly present at the time.

Close Aide to Supreme Leader, Key Military Strategist

Ali Shadmani was considered a key military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and held a pivotal role in shaping Iran’s military operational strategy. As head of the Khatam al-Anbiya Command, he was responsible for overseeing attack plans specifically aimed at targeting Israel.

Shadmani had recently succeeded General Gholam Ali Rashid, who was also killed in a previous Israeli operation known as “Operation Rising Lion.” Following Rashid’s death, Shadmani was promoted to Major General and appointed to lead the same command center.

Israel Steps Up Campaign to Cripple Iran Military Infrastructure

The targeted assassination is part of a broader Israeli campaign to degrade Iran’s military command and missile infrastructure. Over the past few days, the IDF has claimed to destroy multiple Iranian facilities linked to surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile systems, including missile storage depots, UAV (drone) launch sites, and missile launch platforms.

Regional Tensions Mount as Conflict Enters Fifth Day

The ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran entered its fifth day on Tuesday, with tensions escalating and no signs of de-escalation in sight. Iran has reportedly launched several missiles toward Israeli territory, prompting air raid sirens to go off in Haifa, northern Israeli cities, and the Golan Heights. Analysts warn that this ongoing military confrontation could have serious implications for regional stability.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by Iranian authorities regarding Shadmani’s reported death. However, sources indicate growing unease within Iran’s leadership, with some analysts viewing the strike as part of a calculated Israeli effort to dismantle Iran’s chain of military command during a period of heightened conflict.

The situation remains fluid, with both nations showing no immediate signs of de-escalation.
