Andhra Pradesh Mountaineer Conquers Cho Oyu, Setting a New Benchmark in Indian Mountaineering
Bharath Thammineni, a 36-year-old mountaineer from Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, has scripted history by becoming the first Indian to climb nine of the world’s fourteen 8,000-metre peaks. His latest achievement came on October 14, when he successfully summited Cho Oyu (8,188 metres) — the sixth-highest mountain in the world — at 6:55 a.m. (China time). This remarkable feat marks a defining moment in India’s mountaineering journey.
As the Founder of Boots & Crampons, one of India’s premier mountaineering organisations, Thammineni completed the Cho Oyu expedition through a self-supported climb, with base camp assistance from Nepal-based Climbalaya. With this successful ascent, he has joined the league of elite global climbers who have conquered multiple “eight-thousanders” — mountains towering above 8,000 metres.
Expressing his emotions after the summit, Thammineni said,
“This climb is not just a personal victory — it’s a salute to every Indian mountaineer who dreams of standing atop the world. I dedicate this achievement to my family, my friends, my team at Boots & Crampons, and to the spirit of India that continues to inspire me on every climb.”
Over the past decade, Thammineni has earned recognition not only as a fearless climber but also as a mentor and expedition leader. Under his leadership, the Everest 2025 Expedition achieved several groundbreaking milestones — including Angmo’s record as the world’s first blind woman to summit Mount Everest and Karthikey’s accomplishment as the youngest Indian to complete the Seven Summits challenge.
