Dev Deepawali celebrations

The night of Kartik Purnima is also celebrated as Dev Deepawali with grand ceremonies especially in Varanasi. It is believed that on this day the Gods descend on Earth and light lamps to celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over demon Tripurasura. Every year on this night lakhs of lamps are lit on the ghats of the Ganga giving Kashi a divine view.

After sunset Deepdaan is performed by lighting diyas in homes temples and also by floating lamps in rivers. Donations like food grains clothes jaggery ghee oil rice and blankets are offered. Feeding the poor or Brahmins is considered very auspicious on this day.
