Why Experts Believe Meditation Should Begin In Childhood: Know Here!

Updated At: November 3, 2025 3:49 PM

Science and child psychology both agree that teaching meditation young can help children grow into emotionally stronger adults

Meditation is usually seen as a practice for adults but mental health experts and neuroscientists say it is actually more effective if it begins in childhood. The age between 5 and 15 is the phase where the brain develops fastest and habits formed here stay for life. If calmness, focus and emotional control are taught early they become natural traits as the child grows up.

What Research Shows About Young Brains

Brain studies have shown that even a few minutes of deep breathing or mindful listening every day can change brain circuits in children. Meditation helps develop the prefrontal cortex which is the part of the brain responsible for attention, decision making and self control. It also reduces amygdala hyperactivity which is linked to fear and anxiety. This is why many modern schools around the world have replaced punishment with mindfulness time because students become more cooperative and less aggressive with such practices.

How Meditation Benefits Children

  • Introducing meditation young can help children in many ways
  • Improves concentration and attention in studies
  • Teaches them how to identify and manage emotions
  • Builds self confidence and inner security
  • Reduces anxiety overthinking and sleep issues
  • Increases empathy and kindness which supports healthier friendships

Meditation also reduces exam stress performance pressure and emotional outbursts which are very common in growing years.

Which Practices Work Best For Kids

Meditation for children should be simple playful and short.

  • 5 minutes of deep belly breathing
  • Guided visualisation or imagination
  • Listening to calm guided relaxation stories
  • Slow mantra chanting like Om or Namah Shivaya
  • Just 5 to 8 minutes daily is enough for effective results.

Starting Early Prevents Stress Later

Adults usually turn to meditation after stress has already affected their mental health. But children can start before any damage begins. Meditation from a young age builds a stable base and shapes their personality into a calm confident and emotionally aware adult.

Experts say that when a child learns how to pause observe and respond calmly they carry that inner strength throughout their life. This is why more parents teachers and mental health professionals now recommend beginning meditation right from childhood.
