AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi was sworn in as the Pro-Tem Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly at Raj Bhawan in Hyderabad on Saturday. The swearing-in ceremony was officiated by Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. Akbaruddin Owaisi took the oath, invoking the name of Allah.
According to a notice issued by the state legislature, the Governor of Telangana appointed Akbar Uddin Owaisi, a Member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, to perform the duties of the Speaker until a Speaker is officially elected under Article 178 of the Constitution of India. Owaisi will also be the person before whom the newly elected Members of the Assembly will make and subscribe to the oath or affirmation required under Article 188 of the Constitution of India.
The role of Pro-Tem Speaker is temporary and serves until the Speaker is officially elected. Akbaruddin Owaisi will be responsible for administering oaths to the newly elected members of the Assembly.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Raja Singh mentioned their decision to boycott the event, stating, “Every time Revanth Reddy used to make a statement that BJP, AIMIM, and BRS are one, but the people of Telangana have known who is with whom… We will not take an oath in front of such a person… We will boycott.”
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by CM Revanth Reddy, former Speaker, former Ministers, and MLAs. On Thursday, CM Revanth Reddy and 12 MLAs took oaths as Ministers in the Telangana cabinet.
