Research has already indicated the potential dangers of sleeping close to your phone, highlighting the negative impact it can have on your health and well-being. Apple, the company behind iPhones, recently released a clear warning for individuals who tend to fall asleep while holding their phones, especially when the phone is being charged. This cautionary message can be found in Apple’s online user guide.
According to this guidance, Apple advises that iPhones should only be charged in well-ventilated environments and on flat surfaces like tables. Charging on soft surfaces such as blankets, pillows, or your body is explicitly discouraged.
The advisory explains that iPhones generate heat while charging, and if this heat gets trapped in confined spaces, it can lead to burns or even start fires. Placing a charging phone under your pillow is considered one of the riskiest practices for smartphone users.
The main message from Apple is straightforward: “Avoid sleeping on top of a device, power adapter, or wireless charger while they’re connected to a power source. Always keep your iPhone, power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when using or charging. Be especially cautious if you have a medical condition that affects your ability to sense heat against your body.”
Apple also warns against using damaged cables or chargers, as well as charging in the presence of moisture.
