Schools in Andhra Pradesh have declared a holiday due to Cyclone Michaung, which is anticipated to hit the state. The NTR and Krishna districts will have no classes on December 5, as announced by NTR District Collector S Dilli Rao. All educational institutions, including schools and colleges, will be closed, and exams scheduled for that day have been postponed.
The District Education Officer (DEO) reported that the SA 1 exams planned for December 5 have been deferred due to the meteorological department’s warnings of widespread rain caused by Cyclone Michaung. The district will be shut for two days, and school and college authorities are advised against conducting any classes during this period.
In an official notification, the district collector stated that schools must make up for these holidays by utilizing the second Saturdays in case there is a shortfall of 220 working academic days. The state government has also alerted coastal districts to be cautious in light of Cyclone Michaung.
In addition to Andhra Pradesh, schools in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, including Kalaiselvi, Kanchipuram, Chennai, Chengalpet, and Thiruvallor, remained closed on December 5 due to heavy rain and floods. Schools in Puducherry and Karaikal regions are also closed on the same day.
The closure follows the prediction that severe cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ is expected to make landfall on December 5 on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machilipatnam. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported moderate rainfall with gusty winds in the Bapatla district.
The IMD stated, “Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘MICHAUNG’ is likely to cross south Andhra Pradesh during the forenoon of December 5 with a maximum wind speed of 90-100 Kmph.” The cyclone is anticipated to move nearly northwards parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast, crossing between Nellore and Machilipatnam.
