Delhi Implements Odd-Even Rule from Nov 13-20, Schools Closed for Most Grades due to Rising Pollution

The odd-even traffic rule will be implemented in Delhi from November 13 to 20, following Diwali. In light of the worsening air quality, State Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced that schools will remain closed, except for Classes 10 and 12, until November 10. Previously, only classes up to Class 5 were suspended due to deteriorating air quality.

Delhi has been enveloped in hazardous smog for nearly a week, leading authorities to prohibit the entry of diesel trucks and halt construction activities in the city as part of Stage-4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The ban on BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles will also be in effect, along with other measures such as the prohibition of firecrackers and the installation of smog guns.

The odd-even traffic rule, a flagship initiative of the Arvind Kejriwal government in combating pollution, will be enforced for a week starting on November 13, the day after Diwali. Under this rule, vehicles with registration numbers ending in an odd digit will be allowed on Delhi roads on odd-numbered days, while those with even digits will be permitted on even-numbered days.

The possibility of extending the odd-even rule beyond November 20 will be reassessed later, according to the minister.

The overall air quality index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 488 this morning, significantly exceeding the upper limit set by the World Health Organization. Some of the worst-affected areas included RK Puram (466), ITO (402), Patparganj (471), and New Moti Bagh (488).

With the AQI around 500, the air quality in Delhi and nearby cities is equivalent to smoking 25-30 cigarettes a day.
