Young Bhutan spinner Sonam Yeshey becomes the first player ever to claim 8 wickets in any T20 match worldwide, setting a new historic benchmark

Bhutan’s rising cricket star Sonam Yeshey has rewritten T20 history by becoming the first bowler in the world to take 8 wickets in a single T20 match, whether international or domestic. The incredible achievement came in the third T20 International of the 5 match series against Myanmar at Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan, on December 26.

Bhutan set a total of 127 for 9, and Yeshey completely destroyed Myanmar’s batting order. His unbelievable figures of 8 wickets for 7 runs in 4 overs, including a maiden, bowled out Myanmar for 45 runs. Bhutan secured a dominant 82-run victory, while Yeshey’s spell now stands as the best bowling performance ever recorded in the T20 format.

A New Global Standard in T20 Bowling

Cricket record books now have a new name at the top. The previous best figures in men’s T20Is belonged to Malaysia’s Syazrul Idrus, who took 7 for 8 against China in 2023.

Bahrain’s Ali Dawood also had 7 for 19 against Bhutan in early 2025. In domestic T20s, Colin Ackermann and Taskin Ahmed had taken 7-wicket hauls, while Rohmalia of Indonesia once grabbed 7 for 0 in women’s cricket.
No bowler in the world had ever claimed 8 wickets in a T20 match before Yeshey’s magical spell.

Sonam Yeshey, born on 3 December 2003 is a 22-year-old slow left-arm orthodox spinner, represents Bhutan in T20 Internationals.
