Radha Raturi Makes History as Uttarakhand’s First Female Chief Secretary

Introducing Radha Raturi, the first female Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, who is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer from the 1988 batch. Recently appointed to this historic position, she succeeds Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, with the official order for her to assume charge immediately.

Radha Raturi, married to Anil Raturi, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who served as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Uttarakhand until November 2020, comes from a family with a civil service background. With a foundation in journalism, IAS Raturi entered the civil services driven by a passion to make a positive impact. She graduated with Honours in History from Mumbai in 1985, pursued a master’s in mass communication, and later completed an MA in Public Personnel Management at Osmania University. Her early professional experience includes working briefly as a journalist for The Indian Express in Bombay and India Today.

Throughout her extensive administrative career, Raturi has held significant positions, including the role of District Magistrate in Dehradun. Notably, she stands out as a rare individual who successfully cracked the UPSC Civil Services Exam in all her attempts. Beginning in 1985, right after her graduation, she secured a position in the Indian Information Service (1986 batch) initially but later reattempted to secure a place in the Indian Police Service (IPS) and eventually achieved her goal of joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in her third attempt.

Originally allotted to the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Raturi later requested a transfer to the UP cadre. Her first posting in Uttarakhand was in Tehri Garhwal, marking the commencement of her career in the state.
