Rohit Sharma became emotional when discussing Rahul Dravid and his decision to step down as head coach before India’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Ireland. Rohit, the captain of India, admitted to trying to persuade Dravid to stay but ultimately respected his decision. Reflecting on their association, Rohit expressed admiration for Dravid’s achievements and determination throughout his career.
Dravid, fondly known as ‘The Wall’ of Indian cricket, took over as head coach in 2021. Despite not securing an ICC trophy during his tenure, the partnership between Rohit and Dravid proved fruitful, with India reaching the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup, as well as the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Regarding the upcoming match against Ireland, Rohit discussed the possibility of playing four spinners but remained cautious, emphasizing the importance of having options. He also commented on the conditions of the Nassau County Cricket International Stadium, suggesting that a score of 140-150 could be competitive given the slow pitch and uneven outfield observed in previous matches. Rohit emphasized the team’s focus on performing well in all aspects of the game against their opponents.
