Workshop on Voluntary Code of Conduct for Chemical Sector Held in New Delhi

On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2024, a workshop was organised by the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) in partnership with the Indian Chemical Council, emphasizing the crucial role of a voluntary code of conduct in the chemical sector to combat the menace of drug abuse.

Shri Vivek Aggarawal the Additional Secretary (Rev), Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, along with Shri Dinesh Bouddh , Narcotics Commissioner, Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) lighted the lamp and inaugurated the event. In his Inaugural Speech Sh Aggarwal further underscored the collective commitment towards fostering a drug-free nation.

Highlighting the industry’s perspective, Mr. Rupark Sarswat, Chairman, ICC Northern Region and CEO, India Glycols Limited, shed light on the outlook of the chemical sector. Shri Dinesh Bouddh, Narcotics Commissioner of India, elucidated the statement of purpose, while Shri Anil Ramteke, Chief Controller of Factories, Department of Revenue, Government of India, emphasized the imperative of responsible chemical management.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the misuse of precursor chemicals, the workshop emphasized the need for vigilant oversight and responsible usage across all stages of their lifecycle. Insights into global chemical control trends provided by a representative from the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) further enriched the discussions.

In a combined effort to combat illicit drug manufacturing, the workshop advocated the adoption of a voluntary code of conduct, aiming to strike a balance between legitimate industrial use and the prevention of chemical diversion for illegal purposes.

The workshop served as a platform to sensitize corporate stakeholders to the hazards associated with non-scheduled chemical substances, encouraging for informed vigilance and responsible practices. The event culminated in a panel discussion and a vote of thanks.
