GST 2.0 Implemented: Food Items Cheaper, Here’s How to Lodge a Complaint if Shops Overcharge

Updated At: September 22, 2025 6:15 PM

GST 2.0 Update: Ghee, Biscuits, and Hotel Meals Now Cheaper

22 September 2025, New Delhi

From 22 September 2025, the new GST slabs have come into effect across India. The government has reduced GST rates on several everyday and food items to provide relief to consumers. As a result, packed foods, biscuits, snacks, and dairy products such as ghee, cheese, and butter are now available at lower prices.

Which Items Are Now Cheaper?

The government has moved several products from higher tax slabs to lower GST categories:

  • Ghee, Cheese, and Butter: Earlier taxed at 12%, now only 5% GST will apply.
  • Biscuits, Snacks, and Other Packaged Foods: Tax rates have been reduced for these items as well.
  • Hotel and Restaurant Meals: Previously taxed between 12% to 18%, now reduced to 5% GST.

What to Do if Shops Charge Old Rates?

If a shop charges you according to the old GST rates despite the reduction, keep the bill safely. You can then file a complaint to ensure the matter is addressed.

How and Where to File a Complaint

  • Complaints can be lodged with the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAA) or the National Consumer Helpline (NCH).
  • Helpline Number: 1800-11-4000.
  • You can also file complaints through the NCH website or mobile app.

The new GST slabs provide significant relief to consumers, but if shopkeepers continue charging old rates, buyers are encouraged to raise their voice and ensure proper action is taken.
