Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector is nearing its end, and in his absence, Pragyan Ojha has taken charge of the selection committee on an interim basis. Agarkar’s Tenure Nears Its End
Ajit Agarkar took charge as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023. His current BCCI contract is scheduled to end on October 4, 2026.
Under Agarkar’s leadership, the selection committee made several important decisions for the Indian team. As his tenure enters its final phase, speculation around his successor has intensified.
However, one point needs to be made clear: with Agarkar’s tenure nearing its end, the BCCI is currently operating with an interim arrangement until it appoints a permanent chief selector.
Why Did Ojha Take Charge of the Selection Committee?
Pragyan Ojha led the four-member selection committee in Agarkar’s absence. Before the second ODI between India and the West Indies in Guwahati, head coach Gautam Gambhir held a meeting with the selectors.
Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha attended the meeting, while Agarkar was not present.
Ojha subsequently chaired the selection committee meeting. His role immediately sparked discussion about whether he could emerge as a candidate for the permanent position.
Ojha already serves on the selection committee, giving him familiarity with the existing system and the players. That experience also puts him in a position to handle the interim responsibility.
From Player to Selector
Pragyan Ojha represented India in 24 Test matches and took 113 wickets. The left-arm spinner established himself as an international cricketer during his playing career.
His role has now changed completely. The player who once represented Team India on the field now has a say in decisions that shape the squad.
However, the real challenge starts now. As a selector, Ojha will have to look beyond current performances and identify players who can become part of India’s long-term plans.
New Zealand Tour Could Present His First Major Challenge
One of Ojha’s first major responsibilities could involve selecting India’s squads for the New Zealand tour. India will need to pick teams across different formats for the tour.
The selectors will have to assess players not only on current form but also on workload and their suitability for specific formats. They will also have to make decisions regarding the India A squad.
This means Ojha’s interim stint begins at a crucial time, with the selection committee facing several important decisions.
Could Ojha Get the Permanent Job?

Ojha’s name has emerged among the potential candidates. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has also entered the discussion as a possible contender for the position.
