Electreon Wireless, an Israeli high-tech company, has installed the first wireless charging road in Norway, enabling electric vehicles (EVs) to charge while in motion. The company announced this significant milestone to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange on Sunday.
Electreon’s road charging systems use specialized copper coils placed just below the road surface. A new 100-meter segment of this technology has been constructed in Trondheim and will be evaluated for about one year.
The trials will involve three electric buses made by the Chinese company Yutong and a fourth bus from another Chinese manufacturer, Higer, according to a report by Xinhua news agency.
The pilot programs aim to assess the technology’s potential as the sole energy source for buses, allowing them to operate continuously without needing charging breaks, thus reducing carbon emissions.
Additionally, the tests will examine the charging system’s durability and efficiency in Trondheim’s harsh winter conditions, showcasing its reliability and performance in this northern region’s unique climate.
The projects are estimated to cost up to 22.4 million Norwegian kroner, or 2.12 million US dollars, funded by the Norwegian government.
