Lok Sabha Elections 2024: FIR Against Dilip Ghosh for Comments on Mamata Banerjee

New Delhi: 28 March 2024

FIR Filed Against Dilip Ghosh: The troubles for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Dilip Ghosh are escalating in West Bengal ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Another FIR has been lodged against him in Durgapur.

This development comes just hours after Ghosh issued an apology for his remarks made on Wednesday and following the Election Commission’s issuance of a show-cause notice, seeking a response by March 29.

A video that has been widely shared on social media shows Ghosh ridiculing the Trinamool Congress chief’s family background. The Election Commission’s notice featured an English translation of Ghosh’s statement, where he commented, “Didi claims to be Goa’s daughter when she visits Goa, and in Tripura, she asserts herself as Tripura’s daughter. Determine who your father is; this is unacceptable.”

Later on, the Trinamool Congress registered a complaint against the BJP leader with the Election Commission regarding his statements. As a result, the poll body labeled the comment as offensive, disrespectful, and apparently a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and the commission’s prior guidance.

The election commission reminded the Lok Sabha MP about the provision in the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) which specifies that criticism of other political parties should be restricted to their policies, programs, past performance, and achievements. Following this, the BJP sought clarification from Ghosh as well.

Ghosh Regrets His Remarks

Following a controversy surrounding his remarks, Ghosh quickly expressed regret, admitting that both his party and the public had concerns about his language.

I apologize if that is the case,” said Ghosh, who is often noted for his contentious remarks.
Ghosh, a former state BJP president, emphasized that he holds no personal grudge against the chief minister.
“Due to my straightforward approach against wrongdoings, I’ve been embroiled in controversies over my comments before,” he mentioned.
He justified his remarks as a reaction to Banerjee’s political rhetoric, which he alleged was intended to “mislead” the public.
