Celebrating the Artistry of Kannadippaya: Bamboo Mats Reflecting Kerala’s Rich Heritage

The Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) proudly presents the timeless craft of Kannadippaya at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2023. Nestled amidst the Western Ghats, KFRI unveils the mesmerizing artistry of bamboo mat weaving, a tradition upheld by Oorali, Mannnan, Muthuva, Malayan, and Kadar tribes.
Crafted from bamboo, Kannadippaya boasts an exquisitely polished surface, resembling a mirror that reflects both skill and tradition. Situated in Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Palakkad districts, communities of adept artisans intricately weave these mats, showcasing flexibility alongside unique designs.
Recognizing the significance of Kannadippaya, KFRI, acting as a facilitator, has submitted an application to register it as a Geographical Indication. Nearly 100 weavers from tribal settlements in Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Palakkad have been identified, emphasizing the commitment to preserving cultural heritage.
The ‘square’ stands as the fundamental design element, manifested across various weaving designs and dimensions. From simple repetitions to ornate and complex arrangements, the artisans’ creativity flourishes. The categorization of Kannadippaya, such as “ottakkannan,” “anachevidan,” “randuvari,” “moonnuvari,” “naluvari,” and “nandupaya,” is determined by the number and arrangement of mirrors, adding depth to each creation.
As a testament to its commitment to fostering traditional craftsmanship, KFRI participates in the IITF 2023, providing a platform for artisans to showcase their skill and heritage. The Institute’s involvement underscores its role as a guardian of Kerala’s rich biodiversity and cultural legacy.
