Meet India’s Oldest Billionaire: It’s Neither Ambani nor Adani

The oldest billionaire in India is Lachhman Das Mittal, 93, who was included in the Forbes Billionaires List for 2024. Prior to his death on April 12, 2023, at the age of 99, Keshub Mahindra, the previous chairman of the Mahindra & Mahindra firm, held the position.

Few details regarding Lachhman Das Mittal

Lachhman Das Mittal was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, in 1931. He was formerly employed with LIC as an insurance agent.

Mr. Mittal graduated from Punjab University with a Master’s degree in Urdu and was the top student in his class. He was later turned down for a dealership at Maruti Udyog.

At the age of 60, Mr. Mittal entered the business world and founded International Tractors Ltd (ITL), launching the Sonalika Tractors in 1990. With operations in five nations and marketplaces in more than 120, Sonalika Group is a worldwide player today.

The Mittal family is a significant contributor to the company’s daily operations, even though Mr. Mittal is no longer personally involved. In the company, his youngest son, Deepak, is the managing director, while his eldest son, Amrit Sagar, is the vice-chairman. Additionally connected to the business are his grandsons Sushant and Raman.

Usha Sangawan, the daughter of Mr. Mittal, was the first female managing director of the state-owned life insurance company, Life Insurance Corporation of India. At present, she is retired.
