Mizoram Election Result 2023: ZPM Secures Victory, Bringing New Leadership to Mizoram

In a historic turn of events, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), led by former IPS officer Lalduhoma, emerged victorious in Mizoram, securing an absolute majority and marking a significant defeat for the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). Lalduhoma and the ZPM claimed 25 seats and are leading in two others out of the 40-member Assembly, while the MNF won seven seats and leads in three, according to ongoing vote counting in various districts.

Acknowledging the defeat, outgoing Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga is set to meet with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan this evening to submit his resignation letter. The ZPM’s triumph signifies a shift in leadership in Mizoram, as they gain control for the first time.

The BJP also made notable gains, with candidates K. Beichhua and K. Hrahmo winning in Siaha and Palak respectively, defeating their MNF rivals. Meanwhile, Congress, which had previously governed the state, is leading in only one seat—Lawngtlai West.

In the 2018 elections, MNF secured 26 seats, ZPM got eight, Congress won five, and BJP managed to secure one seat. Lalduhoma, the ZPM’s Chief Ministerial candidate, retained his Serchhip seat in a multi-cornered contest, defeating MNF’s J. Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng by 2,983 votes.

Lalduhoma, an IPS officer turned politician, secured 8,314 votes and expressed plans to meet the Governor on Tuesday or Wednesday to stake his claim to form the government. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place within the month.

Key figures from the MNF, including Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, lost their seats to ZPM candidates. The counting process, which began at 8 AM on November 7, involved over 4,000 officials and elaborate security measures across all 11 districts. The state witnessed more than 80% voter turnout, with 174 candidates, including 16 women, competing in the elections. The results signal a significant political shift in Mizoram as the ZPM prepares to take on the mantle of leadership.
