Maharashtra government announces ₹5 lakh aid for families of Nagpur blast victims
A huge explosion took place at SBL Energy Limited, an explosives factory located in Raulgaon village in Katol tehsil, about 25 kilometres from Nagpur city in Maharashtra, on Sunday morning, March 1, 2026. The blast happened between 7:00 am and 7:15 am, soon after workers started their morning shift.
SBL Energy Limited makes industrial explosives, including detonators and blasting materials used in mining and infrastructure projects. The explosion happened in the detonator packing unit of the factory. After the first blast, several smaller explosions followed, and a large fire broke out. Thick smoke rose into the sky and could be seen from far away. The force of the blast caused heavy damage inside the factory.
Officials confirmed that at least 15 workers lost their lives in the explosion. Some of them died on the spot, while others passed away during treatment at hospitals in Nagpur. At least 18 more workers suffered serious injuries and are receiving treatment. Doctors have said that many of them are in critical condition. Officials fear that the death toll may increase if the condition of the injured worsens.
Some early reports mentioned a slightly higher number of deaths, but authorities have officially confirmed 15 fatalities so far. The police have not yet released the full list of the people who died. Reports say that several women were also among the victims.
Explosion Started in Detonator Packing Section
Authorities believe that the blast started in the detonator packing section, where workers handle and pack explosive materials. The explosion happened suddenly and spread very quickly, causing major destruction. The powerful blast damaged the building badly and created panic among workers in nearby areas of the factory.
Officials have not yet confirmed the exact reason for the explosion. However, they have started investigating possible causes. They are checking if there were any safety mistakes, problems in handling or storing explosive materials, or any machine or electrical faults.

Rescue Teams Reached the Spot Quickly
As soon as the explosion happened, local people informed the authorities. Police teams, fire brigade staff, and emergency medical teams quickly reached the factory. Firefighters worked to control the fire, while rescue teams searched for trapped workers.
Because the factory deals with explosive materials, rescue workers had to be very careful. There was a risk of more blasts. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also joined the rescue operation to make the area safe and help in relief work.
Nagpur District Collector Vipin Itankar, Superintendent of Police Harssh A. Poddar, and Inspector General of Police Sandeep Patil visited the site to monitor the rescue work. Authorities shifted the injured workers to hospitals in Nagpur for urgent treatment.
Investigation Underway
The government has sent forensic experts and officials from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) to investigate the blast. These experts are collecting samples and studying the damaged area to find out what caused the explosion.
Officials said that the investigation may take several days because they need to carefully examine the debris and check whether the factory followed all required safety rules for handling dangerous materials.
Government Announces Financial Help
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives. He said that SDRF and NDRF teams are actively involved in rescue efforts. The state government announced financial help of ₹5 lakh for the family of each worker who died. The government also promised support for the injured workers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences. He announced ₹2 lakh financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the family of each deceased worker. Authorities will also provide additional support to the injured.
Questions Raised About Industrial Safety
This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards in factories that handle explosives and other dangerous materials. Nagpur and nearby areas have several industrial units that produce explosives and high-energy materials. While such accidents are not common, they can cause huge damage and loss of life when they happen.
Workers’ unions and local residents have demanded strict safety checks, regular inspections, and better training for workers. They have also asked authorities to take action if the investigation finds any negligence.
Local Community in Shock
The explosion has shocked the local community. Many families gathered outside hospitals to get news about their loved ones. The factory provides jobs to many families in Raulgaon village and nearby areas, so the tragedy has deeply affected the community.
With 15 confirmed deaths and 18 people seriously injured, this explosion at SBL Energy Limited has become one of the deadliest industrial accidents in the region in recent years. Authorities continue to monitor the condition of the injured and are waiting for the investigation to reveal the exact cause of the blast.
