In Delhi, another fatal accident linked to an uncovered drain raises urgent safety concerns just days after the Janakpuri tragedy
New Delhi: Delhi has witnessed yet another heartbreaking incident only days after the Janakpuri pit death shocked the city. This time, a 32-year-old, Birju Kumar Rai, died after allegedly falling into an open drain in Rohini’s Sector-32 area, near the Mahashakti Kali Temple. The tragedy has once again raised serious questions about civic safety and negligence in the national capital.
Man Falls Into Drain
Police received a call around 2:36 pm on Tuesday reporting that a man had gone missing and might have fallen into a sewer opening. Acting quickly, police teams and the fire brigade reached the location and began a search operation. After efforts by rescue teams, authorities recovered Birju’s body from inside the drain. Doctors later declared him dead, and officials sent the body for post-mortem examination.
According to initial reports, Birju had stepped out with friends and was returning home when he may have slipped into the uncovered sewer opening. His sudden death has left his family devastated and residents of the area deeply disturbed.
Safety Under Question
Meanwhile, the Rohini tragedy has drawn immediate comparisons to the recent Janakpuri incident, where 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani lost his life on February 6. Kamal, who worked at a private bank in Rohini, was returning home late at night when he fell into an uncovered pit dug for sewer work linked to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on Joginder Singh Marg.
Before the accident, Kamal had called his family and told them he would reach home in “10 minutes.” However, he never arrived. The next morning, authorities discovered his motorcycle and body inside the open pit. Reports later revealed that officials had left the excavation site without proper barricades, warning signs, lighting, reflectors, or safety arrangements.

The post-mortem report in Kamal’s case confirmed that he died due to traumatic asphyxia. Soil had entered his mouth and nostrils, causing him to suffocate. The report also noted chest compression injuries, possibly because the motorcycle fell on him inside the pit. Doctors further observed burn marks on his body, which likely resulted from contact with the bike’s silencer after the fall.
Police Action And Arrests
Following public outrage, Delhi Police registered an FIR under Section 105 (culpable homicide) against contractors and concerned officials, holding them responsible for negligence. Police arrested sub-contractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati and also took another worker into custody. In addition, authorities issued non-bailable warrants against two main contractors connected to the project.
In response to the tragedy, officials formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter thoroughly. The Public Works Department (PWD) also ordered safety audits across the city and directed departments to ensure proper barricading, lighting, warning signs, and strict compliance with safety norms at all excavation and sewer work sites.
Now, with two young men losing their lives within just a few days due to open pits and drains, public anger continues to grow. Residents and activists have openly questioned how authorities allowed such dangerous sites to remain exposed without basic safety measures. Many have demanded strict accountability and stronger monitoring systems to prevent further accidents.
These back-to-back deaths have shaken Delhi and highlighted serious gaps in urban infrastructure management. As investigations continue in both cases, families and citizens are hoping that authorities will take firm and lasting steps to ensure that no more lives are lost due to negligence.
