Canada to establish Centers of Excellence in AI through University of Toronto and McGill University partnerships
Canada has announced a major scholarship program worth $100 million for Indian students. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared this decision on March 2, during his official visit to India. Through this move, Canada wants to strengthen education ties, research partnerships, and people-to-people connections between the two countries.
This announcement is part of a renewed Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy. The strategy focuses on education, technology, research collaboration, and cultural exchange.
200 Fully Funded Seats
Under this initiative, the University of Toronto has committed up to $100 million to support around 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students. These scholarships will be available for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
The funding will cover full tuition fees and provide financial help for study-related expenses. This support will reduce the financial pressure on Indian students who want to study in Canada. Universities will soon release detailed eligibility rules and application dates.
13 New University Agreements
Canada and India have also signed 13 new Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between leading universities of both countries. These agreements aim to build long-term academic partnerships instead of short-term exchanges.

Hybrid Study Centers Planned
As part of the strategy, both countries will establish three hybrid study locations in India. One major innovation campus will include Dalhousie University, IIT Tirupati, and IISER Tirupati.
These centers will focus on advanced research and practical training in fast-growing sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital technology, and research-driven innovation.
AI Research Collaboration Boost
Canada will also set up Centers of Excellence to improve cooperation in advanced research areas. The University of Toronto Center of Excellence and the McGill University Center of Excellence will focus mainly on artificial intelligence and related technologies.
These centers will support joint research projects and allow researchers from India and Canada to work together more closely.
300 Research Positions Added
The broader agreement also includes 300 funded research positions for Indian students. In addition, Canada has committed $10 million for Indo-Pacific scholarships and fellowships to strengthen academic engagement across the region.
The agreement also covers cultural cooperation. Both countries will promote exchanges in performing arts, visual arts, music, and entertainment technology.
