A car collided with a Secret Service vehicle in Joe Biden’s motorcade on Sunday in Delaware, causing concern for the president’s security. The incident occurred as Biden left his campaign headquarters in downtown Wilmington. The sedan crashed into an SUV at an intersection about 40 meters from the president. Security personnel quickly moved Biden away from the building, and both the president and the first lady were reported to be unharmed, according to a White House official cited by AFP.
The collision took place at approximately 8:09 pm (0109 GMT), and Steve Kopek, a Special Agent and Secret Service spokesperson, confirmed that the Secret Service vehicle securing the motorcade route was struck by another vehicle. Fortunately, there was no protective interest associated with the incident, and the president’s motorcade continued without further problems.
Reporters gathered outside the campaign office, where President Biden and the First Lady were having dinner with their staff, attempting to ask questions about the incident. However, the only visible response from the president was a surprised expression.
Security agents responded by surrounding the silver sedan and drawing guns on the driver. Reporters were instructed to evacuate the area, and President Biden safely reached his family home after the incident.
