India has set its sights on sending an astronaut to the moon by 2040, according to a government statement issued on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has provided directives to the country’s space department, which include plans to establish a space station by 2035.
India’s space aspirations received a significant boost when it became the first nation to successfully land a spacecraft near the uncharted south pole of the moon in August, shortly after a Russian mission had failed. It marked India as the fourth country to achieve a gentle lunar landing.
Following this achievement, India launched a rocket for solar research and is scheduled to conduct a test later this week as part of its manned space mission.
The government statement revealed, “The Prime Minister has directed that India should now aim for new and ambitious goals, including the establishment of the ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and going to send the first Indian to the moon by 2040.”
He further added that “To achieve this vision, the Department of Space will develop a roadmap for moon exploration.”
In addition to these objectives, Prime Minister Modi has encouraged scientists to engage in missions to Venus and Mars.
