Indian Railways keeps offline PRS counter bookings unchanged despite introducing new Aadhaar-based online booking rule
Indian Railways has announced a significant change in its online train ticket booking system, which will take effect from January 12, 2026. This change mainly affects passengers who try to book tickets on the first day of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP), a day known for heavy rush and quick sell-outs on popular routes.
What Is the Advance Reservation Period (ARP)?
The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) refers to the time when passengers can book train tickets before their travel date. At present, Indian Railways allows passengers to book tickets up to 60 days in advance. Usually, the first day of this booking window sees the heaviest rush, as many travelers try to secure confirmed seats. As a result, tickets on popular routes often sell out within minutes of bookings opening.
What Will Change From January 12
Starting January 12, Indian Railways will allow only Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users to book general reserved tickets online on the first day of ARP. Aadhaar-verified users can access online booking from 8:00 am until midnight on that opening day.
However, IRCTC users who have not completed Aadhaar authentication will not be able to book tickets online on the first day. Instead, they can begin booking tickets from the second day onwards, depending on seat availability.
Why Indian Railways Introduced This New Rule
Indian Railways introduced this change to make the ticket booking system fairer and more transparent. Officials explained that agents and automated bots often misuse the system and block genuine passengers during peak booking hours. By giving priority to Aadhaar-verified users, the Railways aims to reduce such misuse, control congestion, and ensure real travelers get a better chance to book tickets.
Offline Ticket Booking Will Continue Without Changes
At the same time, passengers who prefer offline booking need not worry. The new rule does not affect offline ticket booking. PRS counter bookings at railway stations will continue as usual, and passengers can book tickets offline by showing valid identity documents.
Tatkal Booking Rules Remain the Same
Meanwhile, the new update does not impact Tatkal ticket booking. Tatkal tickets already require Aadhaar authentication, and all existing Tatkal booking rules and timings will continue without any changes.
What Passengers Should Do Before January 12
Therefore, passengers who usually book tickets as soon as bookings open should link and authenticate their Aadhaar with their IRCTC account before January 12. Aadhaar verification will allow them to book tickets on the first day itself. On the other hand, passengers who do not complete Aadhaar authentication may face limited seat availability when booking starts from the second day.
Overall, with this update, Indian Railways has given priority access to Aadhaar-verified users during the most competitive booking period. Travelers planning journeys on busy routes should complete Aadhaar authentication early to improve their chances of getting confirmed tickets.
