Peru found themselves outclassed by Argentina, who clinched a 2-0 victory in a World Cup 2026 qualifying showdown, courtesy of a scintillating brace by the legendary Lionel Messi. Yet, it wasn’t just Messi’s goals that had the fans in raptures; the 36-year-old also pulled off a mesmerizing dribble during the match, leaving two Peruvian players in his wake. In Argentina’s previous match against Paraguay, Messi was relegated to the bench in a 1-0 victory. However, on Tuesday night, he started the game and showed no signs of rustiness. Facing Peru, Messi opened the scoring for Argentina in the 32nd minute and then doubled the lead just ten minutes later. He continued to craft scoring opportunities and kept the pressure on the Peruvian defense, but the elusive third goal remained just out of reach.

“After We Win World Cup, we are brimming with confidence, a relaxed and united unit, and unwavering resolve. Hopefully, our upward trajectory will continue,” he added.
“The most important thing is Messi’s fitness. He’s in charge of managing his own playing time,” Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni noted after the match, with his team maintaining its position at the top of the CONMEBOL standings with 12 points.
Messi won’t be seen in the remaining two matches of Inter Miami, effectively drawing the curtain on his MLS season.
