McDonald’s experienced a global technological failure on Friday, affecting operations in various countries including Japan, the UK, and Australia. However, the company has stated that the incident was not caused by a cybersecurity breach.
In Japan, many McDonald’s locations were unable to process in-person and mobile orders due to the system disruption. A spokesperson for McDonald’s Holdings Company Japan mentioned that efforts were underway to quickly restore normal operations.
In a statement, McDonald’s acknowledged the technology outage and assured customers that the problem was being addressed. While outlets in the UK and Ireland have fully resumed operations, McDonald’s Australia reported that most of its restaurants were open again.
With approximately 40,000 restaurants worldwide, including over 14,000 in the United States, McDonald’s has a significant global presence. The extent of the impact of the technology outage on its global network was not immediately clear, and the company did not provide further details upon request.
Reports indicated that the outage also affected customers in Hong Kong and New Zealand, prompting complaints on social media platforms. McDonald’s Hong Kong reportedly experienced a “computer system failure,” causing disruptions to mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks.
Earlier in the month, Meta-owned platforms Facebook and Instagram also encountered technical issues, disrupting services for users worldwide for more than two hours.
