New Delhi : TMC leader Mahua Moitra has opted to forego her scheduled summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) today, citing her engagement in election campaigning within her constituency. Moitra, who stands as the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal, communicated to reporters that she will be dedicating her time to canvassing efforts in Krishnangar. The summons from the ED pertains to an alleged cash-for-query case.
The ED issued fresh summons to Moitra and Dubai-based businessman Darshan Hiranandani for questioning in a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) contravention case, following her failure to comply with two earlier summons on March 11 and February 19. Moitra was required to furnish specific documents relevant to foreign investments linked to the ongoing investigation.
Recent actions by the ED include conducting raids at three locations in West Bengal associated with Moitra, including her father’s residence in South Kolkata, her party office in Krishnanagar, and her personal residence in Karimpur, Nadia district.
Despite her expulsion from the Lok Sabha in December for “unethical conduct,” Moitra has been renominated by her party to contest from the Krishnanagar seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Moitra’s involvement in controversy stems from allegations made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, accusing her of targeting the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in her parliamentary questioning, allegedly at the request of businessman, named Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for gift. Dubey also accused Moitra of jeopardizing national security for monetary gain.
Moitra has consistently refuted these allegations, maintaining that her scrutiny of the Adani Group’s deals has led to her being unfairly targeted.
