Former Bihar Chief Minister and champion of social justice, Karpoori Thakur, has been posthumously honored with the Bharat Ratna on his birth centenary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a tribute article on the occasion, highlighting Thakur’s unwavering commitment to social justice and simplicity.
In his editorial, the Prime Minister lauded Thakur’s impact on millions, particularly from the Nai Samaj, one of the most backward sections of society. Overcoming numerous challenges, Thakur dedicated himself to societal betterment.
PM Modi underscored Thakur’s life principles, stating, “Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur’s life revolved around the twin pillars of simplicity and social justice. His modest lifestyle and humble nature resonated deeply with the common people until his last breath. Anecdotes abound, such as his preference to use personal funds for personal matters, including his daughter’s wedding.”
The article also recounted an incident during Thakur’s tenure as Bihar Chief Minister when a decision was made to build a colony for political leaders. Thakur declined any land or funds for himself. Upon his passing in 1988, leaders visiting his village were moved by the simplicity of his home.
Karpoori Thakur’s life mission, according to PM Modi, was to address societal inequalities. “Social justice was most dear to Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji. His political journey aimed to create a society where resources were distributed fairly, ensuring opportunities for all, irrespective of social standing,” wrote the Prime Minister.
PM Modi emphasized Thakur’s principled stance against the Congress party, believing it had strayed from its founding principles. Thakur’s commitment extended to the empowerment of the less privileged classes, marked by his efforts to strengthen affirmative action for backward classes.
The Prime Minister praised Thakur’s role in laying the foundation for a more inclusive society, where birth did not determine one’s fate. He acknowledged the government’s alignment with Thakur’s vision, citing achievements in poverty reduction and schemes promoting economic independence.
Highlighting government initiatives inspired by Thakur’s vision, PM Modi expressed confidence that Thakur would have been proud of India’s progress in freeing millions from poverty. The article concluded with gratitude for Thakur’s legacy and the government’s commitment to walking the path he had shown.
