Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Greece for a one-day visit on Friday following his participation in the BRICS Summit in South Africa. This visit to Athens by Modi holds significance as it marks the first prime ministerial visit from India since Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s trip to Greece in September 1983. On the other side, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had visited New Delhi in 2019.
According to a report from the Press Trust of India (PTI), Greece recognizes the substantial alignment of interests with India on both regional and global levels. Greece aims to position itself as a crucial gateway for India into Europe. The country strategically seeks to capitalize on the strong convergence of interests with India and make use of its potential as an entry point for Indian influence into the European sphere.
In June, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Greece, during which both sides explored avenues to expand bilateral ties. They emphasized the importance of adhering to fundamental international principles, including the rule of law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
During his visit to Greece, PM Modi will be accorded a ceremonial reception upon his arrival. He will also hold meetings with the Greek President and Prime Minister. Discussions with Greek counterpart Kyriakos Mitsotakis and other leaders will focus on enhancing the ties between the two nations. Additionally, interactions with business leaders from both countries and the Indian community in Greece are also planned.
The Greek Prime Minister will host a business lunch for Modi during the visit. Furthermore, PM Modi will pay his respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens and engage with the Indian community there.
