Love that never found its happy ending: Sulakshana Pandit and Sanjeev Kumar’s Heartbreaking Story

Updated At: November 8, 2025 12:25 PM

She was the voice that defined an era — melodious, pure, and full of emotion. Sulakshana Pandit, known for her soulful songs and graceful on-screen presence, lived a life that felt straight out of a tragic film — beautiful, intense, and heartbreakingly incomplete. Behind her fame and success was a love story that never found its ending, a story of deep affection, silent heartbreak, and a cruel twist of fate. In a haunting coincidence, Sulakshana passed away on the same date that marks the death anniversary of the man she loved, Sanjeev Kumar.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Sulakshana Pandit was one of Bollywood’s most celebrated playback singers and actresses. Her sharp features, radiant smile, and gentle charm won the admiration of millions. But while the world adored her, her heart belonged to one man — Sanjeev Kumar, her co-star in the 1975 film Uljhan. Known for his serious, introspective nature, Sanjeev was already an established star when Sulakshana met him. For her, it was love at first sight. Unfortunately, destiny had other plans. At that time, Sanjeev Kumar was deeply in love with Hema Malini, the “Dream Girl” of Indian cinema. Despite knowing this, Sulakshana couldn’t help falling for him.

Sanjeev’s affection for Hema Malini was well-known in the industry. He even proposed marriage to her, but Hema politely refused, as she was in love with Dharmendra. Heartbroken, Sanjeev found comfort and companionship in Sulakshana, who was always there to listen and support him. Over time, their friendship deepened, and for a moment, it seemed as though love might blossom between them. But when Sulakshana finally confessed her feelings, Sanjeev gently turned her down. That rejection shattered her completely.

Unable to bear the pain, Sulakshana slowly withdrew from films and from public life. She began living a quiet, secluded existence with her mother in a small apartment in Mumbai. Despite her family’s support, she sank into deep depression. When Sanjeev Kumar passed away in 1985, the grief was too much for her to bear. The man she had loved all her life was gone forever, and with him went her will to face the world. Reports suggest that she suffered a mental breakdown and, for a time, struggled to recognize even close friends and relatives.

In a rare 1999 interview, Sulakshana spoke candidly about her pain. “After Sanjeev left, I went into depression. I almost destroyed myself, but by God’s grace I survived,” she said. “Even today, I haven’t completely recovered from that shock. I keep my room closed and spend my days watching films and listening to songs — it helps me face life.” After the death of her parents, she lived with her sister, actress Vijeta Pandit, but the shadows of her past never truly left her.

In the end, life came full circle for Sulakshana Pandit. The woman who had once sung of love and heartbreak passed away on the same date that her beloved Sanjeev Kumar had left the world. It was as though destiny, which had kept them apart in life, finally united them in eternity — two souls bound forever by an unspoken, unfulfilled love.
