The UAE reflects on five decades of progress in women’s empowerment, guided by the visionary leadership of Sheikha Fatima.
UAE recently reflected on its extraordinary journey toward women’s empowerment and celebrated a significant milestone on 28 August 2025. This date marks the 10th Emirati Women’s Day as well as the 50th anniversary of the formation of the General Women’s Union. The day serves to recognise the remarkable progress achieved by Emirati women in governance, the economy, and society, while also paying tribute to the visionary leadership of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, affectionately known as “the Mother of the Nation.” Under her guidance, legislation and policies have continually advanced the cause of gender equality across the UAE.
A Golden Jubilee of Women’s Empowerment
The UAE celebrated this year’s Emirati Women’s Day; it was a little more special as it coincided with the golden jubilee of the General Women’s Union founded under Her Highness Sheikha Fatima’s vision in 1975. The theme, “Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years,” expresses a sense of shared spirit among Emirati women and highlights their considerable roles in supporting development in their country across sectors.
Major Achievements in Governance and Policy
Over the past fifty years, Emirati women have made significant strides in governance, legislation, and public service. A landmark decision to ensure 50% representation of women in the Federal National Council (FNC) stands out as a testament to inclusive governance. Currently, nine women ministers are part of the federal cabinet, overseeing important portfolios such as tolerance, community development, youth affairs, and food security. Legal reforms, including equal pay legislation and enhanced maternity and paternity leave, further underscore the nation’s commitment to gender equality.
Growing Economic and Social Contributions
Emirati women are not just influencing policy; they are also key players in driving economic growth. They make up two-thirds of the public-sector workforce, hold about 30% of leadership roles, and own thousands of licensed businesses that significantly contribute to the national economy. As more and more women enter leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation, the UAE continues to stake its claim as a regional leader in women’s empowerment.
National Celebrations and Community Engagement
Across the Emirates, communities and institutions celebrated with activities. In Dubai, the celebration was anchored by the Dubai Mallathon, a community walk/run at Dubai Mall, which drew together women’s empowerment, health and social engagement. Corporate bodies, government entities, and cultural institutions also supported festivities and campaigns honouring women leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals shaping the UAE’s story.
Messages from UAE leadership reinforced that the celebration is not simply about celebrating the past but about setting a new space for change. The UAE celebrated the 50-year legacy of the GWU; it also recommitted to equality, which is why Emirati Women’s Day is recognised as a time of celebration, reflection, and renewed commitment to empower women in every walk of life.
