Nation recalls tragic 2019 Pulwama attack as political leaders salute bravery and sacrifice of 40 CRPF personnel
New Delhi: On 14 February 2019, terror struck Pulwama in one of the deadliest attacks in India’s history. A suicide bomber targeted a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), killing 40 jawans and leaving the entire nation in shock and grief. Since then, India observes this day every year to honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of the martyrs.
What Happened on 14 February 2019?
On that afternoon, a large CRPF convoy moved along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway. The convoy included around 78 vehicles carrying more than 2,500 personnel who were heading towards Srinagar. Because heavy snowfall had earlier forced the highway to close, authorities later allowed a large number of personnel to travel together once the road reopened.
At approximately 3:15 PM, near Lethpora in Pulwama district, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden SUV into one of the buses in the convoy. The explosion was massive. Reports suggested that the attacker used over 300 kilograms of explosives, which completely destroyed the bus and severely damaged nearby vehicles. As a result, 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives and several others sustained injuries.
Soon after the attack, the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) claimed responsibility. Investigators later identified the suicide bomber as Adil Ahmad Dar, a local resident who had joined the militant outfit months earlier. The incident triggered nationwide mourning, candle marches, and strong condemnation from across the political spectrum.
India’s Response and Aftermath
In response, the Indian government acted swiftly. It withdrew Pakistan’s Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status and launched diplomatic efforts to isolate terror networks internationally. At the same time, security forces intensified counter-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Subsequently, on 26 February 2019, the Indian Air Force carried out airstrikes on terror training camps in Balakot, Pakistan. This move marked a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries and reshaped India’s national security strategy. The Pulwama attack therefore not only caused immense loss but also led to major strategic and diplomatic developments.
