A Prosperous Settlement of Paliwal Brahmins
Kuldhara was established around the 13th century by the Paliwal Brahmins. The Paliwal community was known for its intelligence, agricultural expertise, and advanced water management techniques. Even in the arid landscape of Rajasthan, they managed to make farming successful. It is said that Kuldhara and several nearby villages were economically prosperous.
But what happened that reduced the history of this village to little more than pages in history books?
According to the popular story, a minister named Salim Singh served in the princely state of Jaisalmer at that time. It is said that he became interested in the daughter of Kuldhara’s village chief and wanted to marry her. To achieve this, he allegedly began pressuring the villagers. According to local legends, if Salim Singh’s demands were not accepted, the entire village would suffer the consequences.
The villagers faced a difficult choice. On one side was the protection of their daughter and their honor; on the other was their homes, land, and the life they had built through years of hard work. Ultimately, they made a decision that remains extraordinary even today. According to folklore, the residents of Kuldhara and 84 surrounding villages decided to abandon everything and leave in a single night.
It is said that while leaving, they cursed the land, declaring that no one would ever be able to settle there permanently again. The next morning, when the sun rose, the village was empty. The houses remained, the lanes remained, and the temples remained—but the people were gone.
This story remains the most significant part of Kuldhara’s identity. But is it the whole truth?
Historians and researchers view the event somewhat differently. Many experts believe that social and environmental factors may have played a more important role in Kuldhara’s abandonment. This region of Rajasthan has long struggled with water scarcity. If there had been prolonged droughts or declining water sources during that period, both agriculture and daily life would naturally have suffered.
Some studies also suggest that economic pressures, increasing taxes, and changes in trade conditions may have forced people to migrate.
