Indian Railways will intensify ticket checks from October 1. Know the ID rules, accepted documents, penalties and key guidelines passengers must follow
New Delhi: If you have a confirmed train ticket, check one more thing before leaving for the station whether you are carrying the required original identity document. Central Railway will conduct a special ticket checking drive from October 1 to October 31, 2026. During this period, officials will verify tickets along with identity and eligibility documents.
The drive will particularly focus on passengers travelling on concessional fares, special quotas, railway passes, E-Pass and PTO.
Why Is the Drive Being Conducted in October?
October marks the beginning of the festive travel season in India. Passenger movement usually rises around Diwali and Chhath Puja, increasing demand for reserved tickets and putting additional pressure on the railway system.
Keeping the festive rush in mind, Central Railway will intensify verification of tickets and passenger eligibility. The exercise aims to prevent misuse of tickets, fraudulent concessions, misuse of reservation facilities and travel without proper authority.
In other words, this is a focused month-long checking drive during the festive travel period.

Why Is Carrying the Original ID Important?
Railway rules require passengers travelling on reserved tickets to carry a prescribed identity document. The most important point for passengers travelling in groups is this:
When multiple passengers are booked on a single ticket, at least one passenger listed on that ticket must carry the prescribed original identity proof.
For example, if four family members are travelling under one PNR, at least one of them must be able to produce the required original ID during ticket inspection.
Passengers should not rely solely on a photograph, screenshot or digital copy of the document, particularly when railway officials require the original document.
Passengers Using Quotas and Concessions Need to Be Careful
The October drive will give particular attention to special quotas and concessional tickets.
Passengers travelling on a concession must carry the documents required to establish their eligibility. Similarly, those travelling under a special quota may have to produce the relevant eligibility proof during inspection.
Passengers travelling on E-Pass or PTO must also carry the prescribed original ID. They should ensure that they have converted the E-Pass or PTO into the required travel authority before starting their journey.
Which IDs Are Accepted?
Railway guidelines recognise several documents as valid proof of identity, including:
- Aadhaar Card
- Voter ID
- Passport
- PAN Card
- Driving Licence
- Photo ID issued by the Central or State Government
- Photo student ID issued by a recognised school or college
- Photo-bearing passbook issued by a nationalised bank
- Prescribed photo-bearing credit card
Passengers should check before travelling whether the document they carry meets the railway’s requirements.
What Happens If You Travel Without a Valid Ticket or Required Documents?
Passengers caught travelling without proper ticket authority may have to pay the applicable fare along with an excess charge.
From June 20, 2026, the minimum excess charge increased from ₹250 to ₹500. Therefore, failing to carry the required documents can result in additional financial consequences.
How Strict Will the Checking Be?
Central Railway will check both reserved and unreserved tickets during the drive. Ticket-checking staff may use the TTE App to verify ticket details when required.
According to Central Railway data, officials detected 18.03 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel between April and August 2026 and recovered around ₹140.81 crore in penalties.
The October drive will strengthen these checks during the festive travel season.
What Should Passengers Do?
If you are travelling by train in October, check three things before leaving for the station:
- Make sure your ticket and PNR details are correct.
- If you are travelling under a quota or concession, carry the required eligibility document.
- Carry the prescribed original identity document.
Families and groups travelling under a single PNR should pay particular attention to the ID requirement. At least one passenger listed on the ticket must carry the prescribed original identity proof.
A few minutes of preparation before the journey can help passengers avoid unnecessary trouble during ticket inspection, particularly during the busy festive travel period.
