Amethi Railway Stations Renamed; Mumbai Next in Line

Eight railway stations in Amethi have been given new names, as approved by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) following a request from the Uttar Pradesh government. This decision, made on February 12, 2024, underscores the commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the region.

The new names, which have received the necessary clearance, are:

Kasimpur Halt -> Jais City
Jais -> Guru Gorakhnath Dham
Bani -> Swami Paramhans
Misrauli -> Maa Kalikan Dham
Nihalgarh -> Maharaja Bijli Pasi
Akbarganj -> Maa Ahorwa Bhawani Dham
Warisganj -> Amar Shahid Bhale Sultan
Fursatganj -> Tapeshwarnath Dham


Rekha Sharma, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Lucknow division of Northern Railways, confirmed that these name changes will soon reflect in the Railway CRIS database. Additionally, clearance from the state public works department for the renaming process is anticipated.

This initiative not only simplifies station identification but also honors local culture and history. The new names commemorate revered figures and landmarks, adding to the cultural richness of the region.

In a similar vein, the Maharashtra government, led by Eknath Shinde, has decided to change the British-era names of eight local railway stations in Mumbai. Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale’s proposal to rename these stations has been approved. The stations on the Central Railway network to be renamed which include Cotton Green, Curry Road, Dockyard Road, Sandhurst Road, and Kings Circle stations. Shewale suggests renaming them as Lalbaug, Dongari, Kalachowki, Mazgaon, and Tirthkar Parshwanath stations respectively. Furthermore, Marine Lines, Charni Road, and Mumbai Central on the Western Railway’s network are to be renamed as Mumbadevi, Girgaon, and Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth stations.
