New Delhi | September 9, 2026: Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo. Unveiled on September 9, the device marks one of the biggest design changes in the iPhone’s history.

In India, the Apple iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900, making it significantly more expensive than the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Apple has redesigned both the hardware and iOS around the foldable form factor, with the device opening into a larger screen aimed at multitasking, gaming, entertainment and productivity.

Apple iPhone Duo Price in India and Availability

The 256GB iPhone Duo is priced at ₹2,99,900 in India. The higher storage variants are priced as follows:

  • 256GB: ₹2,99,900
  • 512GB: ₹3,24,900
  • 1TB: ₹3,74,900
  • 2TB: ₹4,49,900

Apple will open pre-orders in India at 5:30 PM IST on October 16, while sales will begin on October 23, 2026.

The foldable iPhone will be available in Star White and Night Sky finishes and features a Grade 5 titanium construction.

iPhone Duo Gets 7.6-Inch Foldable Display

The display is the biggest highlight of the iPhone Duo. When folded, it features a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Opening the phone reveals a 7.6-inch foldable Super Retina XDR display, which Apple says is 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

The inner display also gets a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and make the crease less noticeable. Apple says both screens maintain the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition smoothly between the folded and unfolded states.

The phone can also remain partially folded, allowing users to use it in different orientations, including as a stand or mini-laptop-style setup.

A20 Pro Chip Powers the iPhone Duo

Apple has equipped the iPhone Duo with the A20 Pro chip, also used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.

The chip is based on a 2nm manufacturing process and features a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims up to 20% faster CPU performance and up to 40% higher GPU performance compared with the previous generation.

The company has also developed a custom vapor-chamber thermal system for the thin foldable body. Apple claims it can deliver up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, particularly during gaming, multitasking and AI workloads.

Dual Battery and Fast Charging

The iPhone Duo houses two batteries, with one positioned on each side of the foldable body. Apple has designed them to work together as a single battery system.

Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. With both screens used equally, the company rates the phone for up to 24 hours of usage per charge.

The phone can charge from 0 to 50% in around 20 minutes using wired charging. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging can take it to 50% in approximately 30 minutes.

Dual 48MP Cameras

The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.

The main camera supports an optical-quality 2x telephoto effect, while the ultra-wide camera supports macro photography.

Apple has also introduced camera features designed specifically for the foldable form factor. Duo Preview allows users to see the camera preview on the outer display, while Smart Take can automatically capture an image when the device detects that subjects are ready.

For video recording, the iPhone Duo can shoot 4K video at up to 120fps in Dolby Vision, making it particularly suited to creators.

Touch ID Returns on iPhone Duo

Apple has dropped Face ID on the iPhone Duo and brought back Touch ID, which is integrated into the side button.

The device also uses an eSIM-only design worldwide, with no traditional physical SIM tray. Apple says eliminating the SIM tray creates additional internal space for components such as the battery.

The Action button is also absent, although Camera Control remains available.

iOS 27 Brings Split View Multitasking

Apple has redesigned iOS 27 specifically for the foldable display instead of simply scaling the existing iPhone interface.

When opened, users can access two Home Screen pages and a Today View, while navigation and controls are positioned toward the sides of the display.

The biggest software addition is Split View, which allows two apps to run side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Users can also run two windows of the same app, save app pairs and use Siri AI while working inside another application.

Apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack have been optimized for the larger display.

Apple Takes on the Foldable Smartphone Market

Apple is entering the foldable smartphone market several years after rivals established the category. Instead of competing on price, the company is positioning the iPhone Duo as a premium device built around its ecosystem, custom silicon, software integration and materials.

At ₹2.99 lakh, the iPhone Duo commands a substantial premium over conventional flagship smartphones, including Apple’s own iPhone 18 Pro lineup.

The device’s biggest differentiators are its foldable design, 7.6-inch display, A20 Pro chip and redesigned iOS 27 multitasking experience.

The iPhone Duo will reach Indian consumers on October 23, 2026, when Apple will begin retail sales of its first foldable iPhone.
