CBSE introduces a 3-language rule from 2026–27 under NEP, boosting multilingual skills, culture, and cognitive learning among students

The CBSE ( Central Board of Secondary Education ) has moved to implement a new language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The aim is to promote multilingualism and strengthen language skills among students.

Introduction to the New Language System
Under this system, students must study three languages—R1, R2, and R3. R1 will be the mother tongue or a regional language. R2 will be Hindi or English. R3 will be another Indian or foreign language. At least two of the three must be Indian languages to support linguistic diversity.
CBSE Implementation from Class 6
From Class 6, three languages will be mandatory, replacing the earlier two-language system. The rule will take effect from the 2026–27 academic session. It is designed to expose students to multiple languages at an early stage.
Changes for Classes 9 and 10
A key change applies to Classes 9 and 10. Students must pass in all three languages. Failing in even one subject may affect the overall result. There is also a possibility that students will have to appear for a third-language exam in Class 10. This signals equal importance for all three languages.
Objectives of the Policy
The policy aims to strengthen multilingual education and promote Indian languages and culture. It also seeks to improve cognitive ability and comprehension skills. Experts say learning multiple languages enhances mental development and communication.
Impact on Schools and Students
Schools will need to update curricula and textbooks. Students, in turn, will have to balance all three languages. Overall, the new CBSE language rule marks a major shift. It aims to make students academically stronger and culturally more aware.
