New Delhi: The controversy around Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming Netflix project Ghooskhor Pandat has escalated sharply, moving far beyond online criticism. What began as objections to the film’s title has now turned into street protests, police cases, court petitions, political statements, and objections from within the film industry. In several cities, protestors have burnt effigies of director Neeraj Pandey and actor Manoj Bajpayee while demanding a complete ban on the film.

Title Triggers Outrage

At the centre of the dispute is the film’s title, Ghooskhor Pandat. Critics argue that the term combines slang associated with corruption with a variation of “Pandit,” a word traditionally linked to the Brahmin community. Because of this association, several religious and caste-based groups claim that the title insults their identity and presents the community in a negative light.

Although the filmmakers have repeatedly stated that the project is entirely fictional and does not target any religion or caste, protestors continue to argue that the title itself is offensive and capable of disturbing social harmony.

Protests Spread Across Cities

As anger grew, demonstrations quickly spread to multiple cities. In Bhopal, members of the Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Samaj organised protests, raised slogans against the filmmakers, and demanded an immediate change to the film’s title. Protestors also warned that they would intensify their agitation if authorities failed to act.

Meanwhile, the situation turned more aggressive in Prayagraj. Protestors gathered in the Civil Lines area, beat effigies of Neeraj Pandey and Manoj Bajpayee with slippers, and later set them on fire. During the protest, they openly called for a ban on the film and strict action against those associated with its production.

Earlier, similar demonstrations had taken place in Varanasi. Protestors assembled near the riverfront ghats, performed symbolic rituals, and accused the film of insulting a respected community. They also urged authorities to intervene immediately.

FIR Ordered and Registered

As protests intensified and tensions rose, the matter reached the state government. Acting on complaints and the growing unrest, the Uttar Pradesh government, under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, ordered the registration of a police case.

Following this directive, an FIR was lodged at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow against the film’s makers. The complaint alleges that the film’s title and promotional material hurt religious sentiments and could disrupt public peace. The FIR reportedly includes sections related to promoting enmity on religious or caste grounds, deliberate insult intended to provoke unrest, and misuse of digital platforms.

Matter Reaches Courts

Alongside police action, the controversy has also entered the judicial arena. A plea has been moved in the Delhi High Court seeking a halt to the release of Ghooskhor Pandat. The petitioner claims that the title defames a particular community and poses a serious threat to communal harmony.

In addition, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, seeking clarification on the issue. The NHRC’s involvement underlines the seriousness with which institutions are viewing the controversy.

Film Industry Objects

At the same time, objections have emerged from within the film industry. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) formally raised concerns over the film’s title. The organisation stated that the title could hurt public sentiment and urged both the makers and the OTT platform to act responsibly.

FWICE’s intervention added further pressure on the creators and expanded the debate around accountability and sensitivity in creative content.

Neeraj Pandey Responds

Amid growing backlash, director Neeraj Pandey released a statement acknowledging that the title had hurt certain sections of the audience. He reiterated that the film tells a fictional story focused on an individual character and does not aim to insult or stereotype any caste, religion, or community.

Responding to the outrage, Pandey announced that the team had decided to temporarily withdraw all promotional material related to the project. He also stated that the film should be judged in its complete context rather than through isolated elements that could be misunderstood.

Manoj Bajpayee Breaks Silence

Actor Manoj Bajpayee also addressed the controversy, saying that he respects public sentiment and cultural sensitivities. He clarified that his role in the film is rooted in storytelling and character portrayal, not in promoting offensive stereotypes.

Bajpayee supported the decision to pull promotional material and stressed that neither he nor the filmmakers intended to hurt any community.

Political Reactions Intensify

The issue has also drawn strong political responses. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati criticised what she described as the portrayal of Brahmins through the film’s title. She backed the FIR against the filmmakers and urged the Central Government to take strict action.

Mayawati also called for a ban on films that, in her view, misrepresent communities. Her remarks further pushed the controversy into the political spotlight.

A Larger Cultural Debate

Overall, the Ghooskhor Pandat controversy has highlighted the ongoing tension between creative freedom and social sensitivity in Indian entertainment. With protests on the streets, FIRs registered, court petitions filed, industry bodies objecting, and political leaders weighing in, the issue has turned into a major cultural flashpoint.

As developments continue, attention remains on whether the filmmakers will change the title and how legal and regulatory authorities will respond to the growing demands for action.
