Rapido case once again exposes how app based bike taxi platforms still lack strict protection systems for women passengers in Indian cities
A shocking case from Bengaluru has again raised serious questions about women’s safety in bike taxi services. A woman passenger has alleged that a Rapido bike taxi rider tried to touch and grab her legs during a ride on Thursday afternoon around 4 pm. She had booked the ride from Church Street to her PG accommodation.
The woman said she objected multiple times but the rider continued misbehaving. She also mentioned that she was unfamiliar with the location and did not feel safe to get down midway.
Woman records incident and posts video online
To protect herself, she immediately started recording a video during the ride. Later she uploaded the video on social media. The clip went viral and sparked public outrage. People online have again started questioning how safe women really are while using app based bike taxi services in big cities.
FIR registered and rider arrested
The woman approached the Wilson Garden Police Station and filed a formal complaint. Police registered the case and confirmed action against the rider. According to reports, his name is Lokesh and in one report the mentioned vehicle number was KA 55 EA 4344. Police said they will verify video evidence, GPS data of the ride and the rider’s background.
Rapido takes action and suspends rider account
Rapido issued a statement confirming that they are cooperating with the police investigation. The accused rider’s account has been suspended immediately. The company also said that they take passenger safety seriously and will take strict action.
