Kemi Badenoch Attacks UK PM Keir Starmer’s Leadership After Morgan McSweeney Resigns

Keir Starmer faces growing criticism as opposition questions his judgment and accountability over controversial Mandelson appointment decision

New Delhi: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under serious political pressure after his Chief of Staff, Morgan McSweeney, resigned over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the United States. The issue intensified after renewed attention on Epstein-related files brought Mandelson’s past connections back into public discussion.

Although McSweeney accepted responsibility for advising the appointment, opposition leaders argue that Starmer made the final decision and must answer for it.

Chief Of Staff Resigns

Morgan McSweeney stepped down after admitting that he advised Starmer to appoint Mandelson despite concerns about Mandelson’s previous links to Jeffrey Epstein. As criticism increased, McSweeney said he would take responsibility for his advice and resign from his role.

However, his resignation did not calm the political storm. Instead, critics shifted their focus directly to the Prime Minister.

Badenoch Slams Starmer

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch strongly criticized Starmer and demanded that he take personal responsibility. She said it was “about time” McSweeney resigned. However, she accused Starmer of blaming others instead of accepting his own mistakes.

Badenoch said that Starmer often says “Mandelson lied to me” or “Morgan advised me,” but she argued that leadership means owning the final decision. She stated that Starmer must take responsibility for what she called his “terrible decisions.”

In another statement, Badenoch said that if McSweeney had hidden security vetting details from Starmer, then he would have been fully responsible. But she explained that McSweeney only gave advice, while Starmer made the final decision. She also claimed that more information could come from the files that the opposition pushed to release. According to her, Starmer’s position has now become “untenable.”

Responsibility Debate Grows

The controversy has started a wider debate about accountability in government. Political commentator Andrew Neil questioned why McSweeney had to resign for giving advice while Starmer, who made the final decision, did not face the same consequence.

Critics argue that advisers suggest names, but the Prime Minister approves appointments. Therefore, they say responsibility must remain with Starmer.

Supporters of the Prime Minister argue that he acted based on the information available at the time. They say McSweeney’s resignation shows that the government is taking responsibility seriously.

Mandelson Under Scrutiny

Peter Mandelson’s appointment was first seen as a strategic move because of his experience in international politics. However, his past connection with Jeffrey Epstein had already caused political concern.

Although Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing, critics say the government should have shown more caution during the vetting process. The release of additional Epstein-related documents in the United States has brought fresh attention to people who had contact with Epstein.

Political Pressure Builds

This controversy has become one of the biggest challenges for Starmer since he became Prime Minister. Opposition parties are now demanding full transparency about how Mandelson was vetted and appointed.

Starmer has not suggested that he plans to resign. However, pressure continues to increase as critics demand accountability at the highest level.

McSweeney’s resignation is an important step and the discussion around leadership, responsibility, and decision-making is far from over.
