Navneet Chaturvedi Urges Authorities to Examine Rahul Gandhi–Sandeep Dikshit Remarks Over Diplomatic Concerns
New Delhi: Janata Party National President Navneet Chaturvedi plans to approach the MEA and PMO over remarks made at a political programme in New Delhi on August 13 involving Rahul Gandhi, Sandeep Dikshit and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Exchange Involving Giorgia Meloni
The controversy stems from an exchange in which Rahul Gandhi demonstrated the manner in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi embraces foreign leaders, using Sandeep Dikshit during the demonstration. Dikshit reportedly mentioned Giorgia Meloni during the interaction, bringing the Italian leader into the political and humorous exchange.
Call for Examination
Chaturvedi has made it clear that he is not presenting allegations of conspiracy or foreign interference as facts. His request is for the competent authorities to establish whether the episode was simply political satire or whether its circumstances and subsequent dissemination merit further examination over possible diplomatic implications.
He wants authorities to review the full, unedited video and verify the exact statements and their context. He also wants them to determine how Meloni’s name entered the exchange. In addition, he has sought an examination of the video’s subsequent spread and any credible evidence of foreign involvement. This includes possible involvement by a foreign organisation, individual, intermediary or other external interest.
The proposed representation also asks the government to use diplomatic channels to determine whether the incident has caused any concern or adverse reaction in Italy and whether it could affect bilateral relations.
No Move to Restrict Political Expression
Chaturvedi said the move does not aim to restrict political expression. He stressed that criticism of the Prime Minister or government alone should not trigger action. If authorities determine that the remarks constitute ordinary political satire, they may not need to pursue the matter further. However, if they find credible evidence of unlawful conduct, deliberate coordination or foreign involvement, he called for appropriate legal action.
He also emphasised that comments involving the leader of a friendly foreign nation can extend beyond domestic politics, particularly in the digital age, when political videos can quickly reach audiences across countries and potentially influence diplomatic perceptions.
