Mahindra Thar OG gets a new platform, suspension, EPS, more powerful engines, upgraded off-road hardware and enhanced safety features
New Delhi: The Mahindra Thar has always been known for its rugged design and strong off-road capability. However, at first glance, the new Thar OG may appear to be little more than a refreshed version of the old model. The real story, however, lies underneath. Launched in 2026, the Thar OG gets changes to its platform, suspension, steering, engine output and off-road hardware. In other words, this update goes far beyond cosmetic changes.
Platform Borrowed From Roxx, While Retaining the Three-Door Identity
The new Thar OG is built on the M Glyde 4G platform, which is also used by the larger Thar Roxx. According to Mahindra, this platform offers greater structural stiffness. This could benefit not just its off-road ability, but also the SUV’s stability and overall driving behaviour on highways.
Interestingly, despite the platform change, Mahindra has retained the Thar’s core identity. The three-door, boxy silhouette remains largely familiar. Most of the changes have been made in areas that the driver is likely to notice behind the wheel.
The Biggest Game-Changer Is the New Suspension
One of the most significant changes over the previous Thar is the new rear suspension setup. The Thar OG gets Pentalink suspension, a Watts Link and Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD). Mahindra refers to this setup as its DAVINCI damping technology.
The aim is to make the Thar more capable both on rough terrain and everyday roads. Compared with the previous model, the new SUV is expected to offer a more composed ride and better cornering stability.

From Hydraulic Steering to Electric Power Steering
Another major mechanical change in the Thar OG is the move to electric power steering. The hydraulic steering setup of the previous model has been replaced by EPS.
This change could be particularly useful in urban driving conditions. Manoeuvring the SUV during parking, making U-turns and steering at low speeds should become easier. This moves the Thar another step closer to being a more practical everyday SUV rather than just a weekend off-roader.
Same Engines, But More Power
The new Thar OG continues with three engine options. The 1.5-litre diesel produces 119PS and 300Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel now develops 152PS and 330Nm. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 162PS and 330Nm.
This means the larger diesel and petrol engines have received performance upgrades. Another notable change is the availability of the 2.2-litre diesel with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration for the first time. This gives buyers a wider range of powertrain choices with the Thar OG.
Off-Road Hardware Gets a Major Upgrade
The real test for any Thar begins where the road ends, and the OG version gets several important upgrades in this area as well. It comes with an Electronic Locking Differential and terrain modes for Mud, Sand and Snow. These features are aimed at enhancing the SUV’s performance and capability in low-traction conditions.
However, these features are not available across the entire range.The electronic locking differential and terrain modes are available only on the 4WD-equipped LXT and ZXT variants.
Safety Gets Greater Attention
The new Thar OG gets several safety upgrades, including six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes and front parking sensors. Mahindra has also equipped it with an ESP 9.3 suite. The six-airbag setup includes additional head, pelvis, thorax and shoulder protection for occupants.
So, What Has Changed the Most?
Viewed from the outside, the Thar OG may appear to be an evolutionary update. The new grille, LED lighting, redesigned bumpers and 19-inch alloy wheels give it a more modern appearance. However, the more significant changes are underneath the bonnet and within the chassis.
The objective with the new Thar OG appears to be not to change the SUV’s rugged character, but to address one of the previous model’s biggest limitations everyday usability. The improved suspension, EPS, more powerful engines, electronic differential and additional safety equipment set it apart from the older Thar.
Mahindra has positioned the new Thar OG as a replacement for the previous Thar, with an introductory ex-showroom price starting at ₹10.32 lakh. Deliveries are scheduled to begin on 11 October 2026.
