Hakan Sukur still holds the fastest goal record in FIFA World Cup history after scoring in just 11 seconds in the 2002 FIFA World Cup
New Delhi: As the countdown for the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins, football fans are once again talking about some of the biggest records in World Cup history. The FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place from June 11, 2026, to July 19, 2026, and excitement around the tournament is already growing across the world. Many fans may think stars like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo hold this record, but that is not true. Former Turkish striker Hakan Sukur, who scored the fastest goal ever and created history on June 29, 2002, during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
He scored against South Korea in just 11 seconds during the third-place playoff match. Even after more than 20 years, no player has broken this record.
Match in Daegu
The 2002 FIFA World Cup took place in South Korea and Japan. Both Turkey and South Korea surprised the football world with their performances during the tournament.
Turkey reached the semi-finals in only their second World Cup appearance. South Korea also made history by becoming the first Asian team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
After losing in the semi-finals, both teams met in Daegu for the third-place match. The stadium was full of excited fans who were expecting a close and entertaining game. But the biggest moment came almost immediately after kickoff.
Goal in 11 Seconds
As the match started, South Korea took the first touch and passed the ball backward. Turkey quickly pressed forward and forced a mistake from the Korean defense.
Turkish player Ilhan Mansiz chased the ball and created pressure on South Korean captain Hong Myung-bo. The ball then reached Hakan Sukur near the penalty area.
Sukur reacted quickly. He moved past the defenders and fired a strong right-footed shot past goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae. The ball went straight into the net. The clock showed only 11 seconds.

FIFA later confirmed that the goal came in 10.8 seconds, making it officially the fastest goal in FIFA World Cup history.
Fans inside the stadium were shocked. Turkish players celebrated wildly while commentators shouted with excitement. Sukur spread his arms and ran across the field as he created a historic moment in football.
Old Record Broken
Before Sukur, the fastest World Cup goal record belonged to Vaclav Masek of Czechoslovakia. He scored after 15 seconds against Mexico during the 1962 FIFA World Cup.
That record stood for 40 years before Hakan Sukur finally broke it in 2002.
Even today, no footballer has managed to beat his record despite the game becoming faster and more attacking.
Turkey Won 3-2
Sukur’s early goal gave Turkey a dream start. The team continued attacking confidently throughout the match.
Ilhan Mansiz scored two more goals for Turkey, while South Korea also scored twice. In the end, Turkey won the exciting match 3-2 and finished third in the tournament.
This remains Turkey’s best-ever result in FIFA World Cup history.
Under coach Senol Gunes, Turkey played excellent football throughout the competition. They finished second behind Brazil in the group stage, defeated Japan in the Round of 16, and beat Senegal in the quarter-finals through a golden goal from Ilhan Mansiz.
Although Turkey lost to Brazil in the semi-finals, they finished the tournament strongly by defeating South Korea.
Sukur’s Comeback
The record-breaking goal became even more special because Hakan Sukur had struggled throughout the tournament before that match.
Before facing South Korea, he had failed to score a single goal in the World Cup. Many people criticized his performances, and reports claimed he could lose his place in the starting lineup.
However, coach Senol Gunes continued to trust him.
Sukur finally answered his critics in the best possible way. After going scoreless for more than eight hours in the tournament, he scored in just 11 seconds and made football history.
Later, Sukur said the goal gave him huge relief after facing pressure during the World Cup.
