Pixel 10 becomes first Android model to offer reliable file transfers to iPhones using optimized Quick Share AirDrop compatibility
Google has launched a major update that allows its Quick Share feature to connect directly with Apple’s AirDrop. This marks the first time Android and Apple devices can exchange files quickly and directly without depending on third-party apps. The update begins rolling out to Google’s newest Pixel 10 lineup.
Quick Share Gains the Ability to Communicate with AirDrop
Google has confirmed that Quick Share, which evolved from Nearby Share, now uses a secure peer-to-peer system to detect and connect with Apple devices. This allows Pixel users to send photos, videos, and documents directly to iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Google also stressed that no file data is stored or passed through cloud servers during the transfer. The company built this entire system independently and did not work directly with Apple on the feature.
Feature Available Only on the Pixel 10 Series for Now
The update is currently available only on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Older Pixel phones and Android devices from brands such as Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi do not support the feature yet. Google has stated that more Android devices may receive support in the future, although no timeline has been announced.
How Pixel Users Can Share Files with Apple Devices
The sharing process requires the Apple user to change AirDrop settings to “Everyone for 10 minutes” so their device becomes discoverable.
Pixel 10 users simply select the file they want to send, tap the share option, choose Quick Share, and wait for the Apple device to appear. The recipient then receives a request and can approve or reject the transfer.
Apple users can also send files back to Pixel phones once both devices are visible to each other.
Stronger Security Through Rust and Professional Testing
Google built the core of this feature using Rust, a programming language known for preventing common security issues. This makes the system safer and more reliable during transfers.
Security firm NetSPI conducted independent testing and reported that Google’s approach is stronger than many similar technologies currently in use.
Current Restrictions and Known Limitations
AirDrop’s “Contacts Only” mode does not work with this cross-platform setup because it requires deeper cooperation between the two companies. The only supported mode for now is “Everyone for 10 minutes.”
Google is rolling out the feature in stages, which means availability may vary between regions and devices.
Impact on Apple and Android Users
This update solves a long-standing problem faced by users who often struggled to share files between Android and Apple devices. The new system allows fast, smooth, and reliable transfers without using additional apps or cloud services.
The change also represents a step toward more openness and reduced isolation between the two largest mobile ecosystems.
Availability for Users in India
Indian users, including those in cities such as Gurugram, will receive the feature as part of Google’s global rollout. The function will work automatically once Pixel 10 devices are available and updated in the region.
