Surajkund Mela Accident: Police Inspector Dies, 13 Injured After Tsunami Ride Collapse

High-speed amusement ride malfunctions at Surajkund Fair, triggering panic, casualties and urgent safety review by authorities in Faridabad

Faridabad : A tragic accident disrupted the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Haryana, when a high-speed amusement ride known as the “Tsunami swing” suddenly collapsed on Saturday evening. The ride malfunctioned while it was operating, leading to chaos and panic among visitors.

At the time of the incident, around 15 to 20 people were on the swing. As the structure failed, the ride crashed down and injured several people present at the site.

Inspector Jagdish Prasad Loses Life While Rescuing Others

As soon as the ride began to malfunction, Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was on duty at the fair, rushed forward to help those trapped and injured. However, during the collapse, he suffered serious injuries. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed.

Inspector Prasad had served in the police force for 36 years and was only weeks away from retirement. Colleagues described him as a dedicated and courageous officer who acted immediately to protect others in an emergency.

13 People Injured, Including Visitors and Police Personnel

In addition to the deceased officer, at least 13 people sustained injuries in the accident. The injured included men, women, children and some police personnel present at the fair. Authorities quickly shifted the victims to nearby hospitals for treatment. Doctors are monitoring their condition, and injuries range from minor to serious.

Authorities Respond Quickly

Following the collapse, police teams, medical staff and district officials reached the spot without delay. They cleared the area, secured the damaged ride and ensured that injured people received immediate medical attention.

At the same time, officials halted the operation of similar amusement rides at the fair until they complete thorough safety inspections and verify certifications.

FIR Registered and Investigation Begins

Soon after the incident, authorities registered an FIR and ordered a detailed inquiry into the cause of the collapse. Officials stated that they will take strict action against anyone found responsible for negligence or violation of safety norms.

Investigators are now examining whether a technical fault, structural weakness or lapse in safety compliance caused the accident.

Chief Minister Expresses Condolences

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed deep grief over the tragedy. He extended his condolences to the family of Inspector Jagdish Prasad and assured that the state government will provide all possible assistance to the bereaved family and the injured victims.

Gate Collapse Injures Two Earlier

Earlier on the same day, strong winds caused an entrance structure at Gate No. 2 of the fair to collapse. Two people, including a child, suffered injuries in that incident. The back-to-back mishaps raised serious questions about safety arrangements at the event.

About Surajkund International Crafts Fair

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is one of India’s largest cultural events. Every year, it showcases traditional crafts, handlooms, regional cuisine and cultural performances from across India and abroad. The fair began on January 31 and will continue until February 15.

However, this tragic accident has cast a shadow over the popular annual event and prompted authorities to review safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
